[] Organic Wine, Beer And Spirits

has posted a new item, 'Organic Wine, Beer And Spirits'

In the UK and USA, producers are increasingly making wines labeled organic or
produced from organically grown grapes. The meaning and legal force of these
terms can vary significantly from one country to another.A key point to add at
this stage is the difference between organically grown grapes - fruit from
vineyards grown without the use of industrial fertilizers, herbicides,
fungicides and pesticides - and wines made without synthetic preservative
additives.Organic Vineyards ? Where it all begins! An organic vineyard is one
where grapes are grown without chemical fertilizers, weed killers, insecticides,
or other synthetic chemicals. This prevents damage to soil and ensures that no
chemicals end up in the wine as residue. Organic farmers aim to maintain
healthy, biologically active soil whose fertility is provided by plants that fix
nitrogen from the air. In the vineyard it means planting cover crops between the
avenues of the vines instead of applying herbicide. Naturally occurring plant or
mineral extracts leave no residue in the soil, and weeds are kept down with the
use of mechanical and hand hoes. Biodiversity is promoted through the plants,
which help regulate the vineyard soil by attracting beneficial insects, spiders
and predatory mites. The Role of Certification and the Organic MarketWhen a label
says organic, it means the wine has met certain standards that are set by a
government agency. Different nations have their own certification criteria, so
whats organic in one country may not be so in another. In the UK the Soil
Association is the most recognized and used certification body. Many wineries
that are technically organic still choose not to be certified. There are many
reasons for this. Some do not want the added costs and bureaucracy of
registering. Others may disagree with their governments standards. Whatever the
case, they are not allowed to use organic on their labels. There is a national
government target for 30 per cent of all UK farmland to be organic or in
conversion by 2010, and 20 per cent of the food consumed to be organic by 2010.
The UK grocery market was worth $206 billion in 2006 and USA 634.7$ billion.
This growth in the organic food market will have a knock on effect on the drinks
industry and will meet the ever-growing demand from consumers for organic wine,
which is better for drinkers and better for the environment.Financial Incentives
to Companies to turn OrganicIn 2005, 39% of the world organic farmland is in
Australia and New Zealand. To combat this The European Union (EU) offers
financial support to organic farmers as an incentive for farmers to convert to
organic production and help the sector grow. These grants provide farmers with
assistance during the period of conversion to organic farming which usually
takes three years.Organic Beers and SpiritsWhile not so widely available as
organic wine, organic spirits are available through specialist suppliers. The
production process for organic spirits does not differ widely from conventional
production. The main difference lies in the use of organic raw materials.
Organic beers are now available in a number of pubs and supermarkets and tend to
use organic hops.Fancy visiting an organic vineyard? If you are into Organic wine
why not visit Englands Premier organic vineyard. In addition to processing fruit
on site, Sedlescombe Organic Vineyard is one of the main tourist attractions in
the 1066 Country region in and around Hastings attracting some 5,000 visitors
per annum to its Vineyard & Woodland Nature Trail + Wine tasting.About the

[] Eating Healthy and Choosing Organic Vegetables and Fruit

has posted a new item, 'Eating Healthy and Choosing Organic Vegetables and
Fruit'

Choosing Organic Vegetables and Fruit for Babies and During Pregnancy. For
babies a purely organic diet can be very beneficial when beginning to eat solid
food. Babies have weak immune systems and need to have pure and safe foods when
they begin to eat. Organic vegetables have more flavour so your little one will
be able to taste the real flavours in his or her food. Eating fruit and
vegetables helps you to stay healthy, but it is especially important during
pregnancy. By eating organic vegetables and fruit during pregnancy you are
exposing your new baby to less toxins. How Big is a Fruit or Vegetable Portion?
80g (or a small handful) of vegetables (raw, cooked, fresh or frozen but not
potatoes)One apple, pear, orange, banana or other fruit of a similar size.2 or 3
smaller fruits such as apricots or plums.A small bunch of grapes, a handful of
cherries or half a punnet of raspberries or other berries.A glass of fruit juice
(although however many glasses you have it will only count once.)Chemicals Found
in Non Organic food. Organic food which is certified as being organic has had no
use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. None of the organic vegetables will
have genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for which the risks are still
unknown. Cox's apples could be sprayed up to 16 times with a total of 36
different chemicals. This is according to a 1998 government report. It is said
that there is no cause for concern for our health. Organic vegetables and fruit
contain almost no residues so to act on the safe side, it may be best to choose
organic for children. Some people still think that by washing their apple
before eating will remove any chemicals, but sadly this is not the case. It
will remove some of the chemicals but certainly not eliminate them as much has
already been absorbed into the skin. Nutrients Found in Organic Food Much
research has been done to sow that organic vegetables and fruit are far more
superior in vitamins minerals and nutrients. Organic vegetables and fruit are
especially higher in antioxidants, vitamin C, iron, magnesium, calcium and
phosphorus.Chromium is a micro nutrient that is low in the diets of Western
people. Its deficiency is associated with the onset of adult diabetes and also
atherosclerosis (which is hardening of the arteries). Chromium was found to be
higher in organic foods by an average of 78%.Selenium is an antioxidant nutrient
that protects from damage by environmental chemicals. It is protective against
cancers and heart disease. In research it has been found to be an average of
390% higher in organic foods.Boron, which has been shown to help prevent
osteoporosis (along with calcium), averaged 70% more.Lithium, which is used to
treat certain types of depression, was 188% higher.Shelley Green is the owner of

[] More Thanksgiving Dirt On Squanto And The Pilgrims

has posted a new item, 'More Thanksgiving Dirt On Squanto And The Pilgrims'

(Thomson, Illinois)--By now most Americans know that the real first
Thanksgiving had very little to do with what is shown in elementary school
pageants. What they may not know as much about is the story of the Pilgrims'
survival in the New World, the Native American Squanto who helped them and how
it all had a lot to do with the dirt underneath their feet. Even after surviving
through their first winter, the Pilgrims' fate was still very much up in the air
and dependent on learning to cultivate the poor soil of the area in which they
had made landfall. Squanto, a Native American who spoke English because he had
been kidnapped by early English explorers and taken to England, was sent to act
as an interpreter. Among other things, he taught them the now famous technique
of burying a dead fish in each mound of corn in order to fertilize it. Both
Squanto and the Pilgrims had no way of understanding the science behind fish
fertilization and the other techniques that were borrowed from the Native
Americans. That is exactly what Bill Heid, the president of the Thomson-based
"Solutions From Science" set out to explore in "Squanto's Secret Garden," a free
Thanksgiving eBook available at: www.squantosgarden.com. Heid has also developed
a new product called ProtoGrow that brings about the success conditions
engineered by Squanto. ProtoGrow, is an organic "super-food" for plants that
acts as an alternative to traditional, chemical-based fertilizers. It was
created to actually mimic Squanto's fish fertilization technique. "What a lot of
people don't know," says Heid, "is that the food the Pilgrims grew probably
tasted better than the food we eat today. And it was also better for them." That
is because fish, and all marine life are uniquely suited to giving the soil the
nutrients that will make it produce the best food. In addition to providing the
soil with vital nutrients like calcium, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and
sulfur, marine life is the best source of trace elements. Trace elements are the
near microscopic amounts of different elements that are necessary for the human
body to survive and that poor soil often lacks. "Food can only ever be as good
as the soil you grow it in," Heid explains. In "Squanto's Garden," Heid looks at
what really happened as the Pilgrims learned to cultivate the land properly. He
also goes back far earlier to examine the problems of the soil in New England
through the area's geological history. By learning about the rocky, poor soil
conditions in the area and how the Native American's living there originally had
adapted their lifestyle to it, he is able to show his reader why the Pilgrims
came so close to failing. But it wasn't just the fish fertilization that saved
them. The Pilgrims changed from a large collective farm to the Native American
technique of using smaller "family" gardens that made optimal use of the pockets
of better soil. They also began to copy the Native American "companion planting"
gardens that helped to nourish the soil. Companion planting is growing specific
varieties of plants in the same space to benefit the plants and the soil. While
all of this information makes sense in a historical context, "Squanto's Secret
Garden" doesn't end there. Many of the soil problems that the Pilgrims had to
overcome are problems today because of over farming and soil depletion. Heid
refers to scientific studies that show how the nutritional value of fruits and
vegetables has diminished dramatically over the past 40 years. Other studies
show that organic fruits and vegetables are nutritionally superior to those
produced using traditional farming methods. The answer, Heid contends, is the
same now as it was in Squanto's day: using marine-based fertilization.
Specifically geared towards the backyard gardener, the second half of Heid's
book explains how to grow an organic garden using Native American planting
techniques and marine-based fertilizer to enrich and improve the soil. A variety
of companion planting possibilities are suggested along with layouts for three
traditional Native American gardens that suit different environments and soil
conditions. It culminates with a selection of English and Native American
recipes making use of garden produce that are based on what was actually eaten
at the first Thanksgiving. By reconnecting people today with one of America's
greatest heroes and his life-giving gift to the Pilgrims, Heid hopes to
revitalize interest in the forgotten gardening methods that gave birth to the
very first Thanksgiving. The story goes that Samoset and Squanto welcomed the
Pilgrims and then asked for beer. But in the end, it wasn't the beer the
Pilgrims had for the Native Americans, so much as it was the fertile gardens and
bountiful harvest the natives returned so freely. "I really want to show all
Americans why Squanto's Secrets worked for our Pilgrim Fathers and how his
life-giving secrets are even more valuable today. As Americans, we should all be
thankful for this great man." Solutions From Science is a small Illinois company

vegetables with alternative, marine based fertilizers.About the Author Bill Heid

[] Where to Submit Your Articles?

has posted a new item, 'Where to Submit Your Articles?'

When choosing where to submit articles authors are now spoilt for choice.
There are literally hundreds of article directories to chose from. Which one
should you submit your articles to and why? Many authors chose just one directory
to submit their articles to. They have a favourite because of its format, size
or layout. There are many advantages and disadvantages to submitting to
different article directories. The huge directories like ezine@rticles are a
great place to submit your articles to in that the site gets a huge amount of
traffic, is very well laid out and has a high creditablity rating across the
internet - proof of this is the number of people who choose to display their
"featured on ezine@rticles" or ezine expert badges on their websites, although
they are trading off traffic to the article directory they get in return the
kudos of being considered as an expert and listen who should be trusted and
listened to and this can result in a higher conversion rate in sales or join
ups. The disadvantage of submitting to a large article directory is greater
competition from other authors. However the general rule is the bigger the
directory the more views your articles will get. Also the link rating of the
directory may result in much higher search engine results. For example if you
are an expert author on ezine@rticles and you type your name into google you
will most likely come up as the top search return (great for the ego). The huge
directories have a multitude of topics to submit to, however other directories
have gone to the other extreme and limited their topics to a niche area, hoping
to dominate a small section of the market. Sites like article garden takes
articles on geared towards sustainable living, organic gardening, etc.Smaller
general article directories like article-gems have less competition and can
result in a close relationship with the editor. It can also mean rapid article
approval. It can also lead to a tighter sense of community and more comments
on articles or authors replying to one another through articles. Hence you may
see an article on one topic and very quickly get another article arguing the
opposite point. This sort of interaction is not generally seen on the larger
directories. It can also have other advantages in relation to RSS feeds and the
like that you articles can be quickly disseminated with little competition from
other authors. These smaller directories may also have easier submission
guidelines or be more open to negotiation on content i.e. lower rejection rate.
However these directories also tend to have lower visitor numbers than the huge
directories. Some article directories like articler offer authors a 50% split in
google revenue. This can be a nice additional income for the author and
represents direct income from article writing. This does mean though that the
directory operator has less money to advertise the directory and therefore your
articles on the internet, which can be a disadvantage. Some authors simply advise
submit to as many article directories as you can. There are a couple of
disadvantages to this. Very quickly you will learn that this can be a huge time
consuming exercise. Also search engines tend to ignore duplicate content
therefore your article may only come up once on a search. I would argue despite
these considerations the more directories you can submit to the better - not
every directory has the same traffic, nor do they all submit to the same RSS
feeds, therefore 'spread the love' as it were. In order to overcome the time
consumption aspect there are numerous programs downloadible over the internet
which can greatly speed up the process. These once set up can mean you can
summit your article to hundreds of directories at the simple click of a button,
which leaves you more time to concentrate on writing the articles and can result
in a huge increase in traffic to your site and a large number of backlinks. If
you need an article submitting robot that once set up submits with one just

[] An Ice Cream Machine - Do You Need One

has posted a new item, 'An Ice Cream Machine - Do You Need One'

If you like ice cream, then having your own ice cream machine is a great
investment. You can make your own ice cream, sorbets and slushies, knowing that
the ingredients are healthy and delicious.Ice cream machines vary in quality and
price, but it's possible to buy a good electric one for under $50. An ice cream
machine is fairly simple, with a canister, a cover, an electric motor to spin
the canister, and a plastic scraper. Before you can make ice cream, the canister
needs to be placed in the freezer for 24 hours. Now that the canister is
freezing, it's placed into the ice cream machine and the ingredients poured
inside. Start up the machine, so that the canister starts to rotate. As it
does, the scraper removes the ice crystals that form on the inside of the
canister and mixes them into the ice cream. As the process continues, the
liquid thickens and freezes until it resembles soft serve ice cream. This takes
about 20 minutes. One of the best things about an ice cream machine is that you
can create whatever combination of ingredients you like. Got a hankering for
banana and mango ice cream? Then make some! You can add any extras you like,
too, such as nuts, candy bits or pieces of fresh fruit.Using an ice cream
machine is a great way to make fresh, unique ice cream, and the best thing is
that it's free of preservatives and chemicals. So if you're interested in
healthy eating or organic food, an ice cream machine is perfect for healthy
treats. If you're on a diet, then use low-fat ingredients without the need for
artificial sweeteners. You can also use an ice cream machine to make frozen
yogurt, if that's what you like. For those with a more creative approach, an ice
cream machine provides endless opportunities. Perhaps make a savory sorbet to
give with a chicken dish, or make a champagne ice cream to give your dinner
party a sophisticated finish. Once you have an ice cream machine, the
possibilities are endless. And the results taste great too!If you want to read

[] US Retailers Shift Gear to Perform Better

has posted a new item, 'US Retailers Shift Gear to Perform Better'

Introduction to the Retail IndustryRetail sector is the second largest industry
in U.S., accumulating number of businesses and employees. According to the
government broad measure of retail sales that consists food service, gasoline
sales and automobiles) sales in the U.S. climb nearly 6.6% to $4.16 trillion in
2005, comparing a 3.8% increase in the year 2004. In the last year, retail
industry evolved strongly, due to higher gasoline costs and good discounting
during the Christmas. The elimination of the global textile quota system enforced
industry players to reorganize their businesses again to thrive in a cut-throat
competition in the global apparel market. Last year was significant for the
exporters and retailers, who re-organize to take benefit of the free trade era,
and the best possible exploitation of resources. New initiatives were put in
practice to meet new challenges to give the buyers value-add products at more
competitive prices. As a result, re-arranging the businesses for stiff
competition was also witnessed in the American apparel industry. The sections,
in which retailers focus on more are - better merchandise and inventory
management, consolidating sourcing and more involvement in sourcing the country.
The only reason behind all preparation was for a better market reach with wide
product range. The strategies made into practice last year and plans for growth
in 2006 brought success for leading retailers like: Wal-Mart, Target, Tommy
Hilfiger, JCPenny, Kohl's, Sears Holding, and Gap Inc., are all sourcing
massively from India.Wal-Mart: Success is a result of expansion strategyWal-Mart
is considered the leader in value-added market and currently shifting gears to
offer better products to its customers. The company was offering limited range
in apparel line, but, has introduced the exclusive apparel line, Metr07
collection in Oct 2005. The intention behind launching this collection is to

various commodity ranges and witnessed increase in recognition as a superb place
for shopping. The company is optimistic about the future growth with 18 newly
added stores, a 22.5 percent climb in operating profits, and more than $1billion
in sales generated from jcp.com. Long-term initiatives have been made, which
were implemented in mid 2005 to increase growth rate until 2009.The designed
plan has four major objectives to concentrate on, emotional touch with the
customers, creating beautiful and easy shop interiors, to make JCPenney the best
working place, and to become a premier in performance. Considering these
objectives, the company has launched many new brands such as Miss Biou,
Lee-work, Nicole, A.N.A., and Solitude. The new POS system that provides internet
connectivity and lessens transaction time to improve the shopping experience was
implemented at more than 30 stores in the previous year. The company will
implement this system in the remaining stores by the end of this year. The
company aims to add 27 new stores in 2006; most of them are scheduled at
off-mall locations. It anticipates mid-single digit increases in sales in the
year with re-organized focus on online merchandise and catalogue. JCPenny's also
targets home furnishing area as another area of development.JCPenney's is one of
America's largest department store, catalog, and e-commerce retailers, employing
approximately 150,000 associates.Target: Implementing new ideas & innovations
for better growthIn a move to comply its strategy to offer exclusive and
exquisite designs, Target sustained to pour-in more investments to developing
design and source fashionable, precise merchandise with objectives to add more
competitively priced ranges along with true value-added goods. The annual sales
reached over $50billion last year, and the company is looking for better growth
on this performance by utilizing the experiences gained over the year.To lure

comparable store sales. Despite the poor sales performance, Gap strengthens its
financial condition in cash and investments with $3billion, and eliminated
$2.9billion in debts since 2002.For the coming years, strategies had been
laid-out to set up operational efficiencies, putting scissors on sourcing vendor
base, making better shopping experience for all clothing lines, and adding more
space to the stores both in the country and overseas. The first expansion of
franchise stores are scheduled to launch in Malaysia and Singapore within the
current year. After the triumph of Forth & Towne, five more operations for the
brand are planned at different locations in 2006. The GAP designer team is
concentrating on making quality products quicker, enhance merchandising at 200
top adult stores, and create buzz that GAP is again on track. The team is
focusing on main products and more amicable fashions in the clothing collection
for Banana Republic. GAP Inc. is also shaking hands with the stake-holders to
handle the bang in economically challenged areas. The major strategies for the
growth are - managing and upholding current brands, with off-shore expansion via
franchise systems, creating an online business, and making new brands.Gap Inc is
one of the world's largest specialty retailers, with more than 3,000 stores and
in 2005 revenues of $16 billion. It operates four of the most recognized apparel

wholesale operations, re-organized product assortment, while growing the company
as a multi-brand recognition. The company reorganized merchandise mix by removing

[] Facial Products: What is the Big Deal with Salicylic Acid?

has posted a new item, 'Facial Products: What is the Big Deal with Salicylic
Acid?'

It seems like there?s a new miracle cure every day in the cosmetic industry.
There are always people willing to spend money on anything that promises to make
them look younger and feel better about themselves. The current quick fix it
salicylic acid. What exactly is it, and what does it do?Salicylic acid is an
organic acid found in tree bark or certain trees. Native American Indians
discovered that chewing the tree bark alleviated headaches and other
inflammatory pain. Today, that form of salicylic acid is used to make
aspirin.Skincare products commonly use salicylic acid for its variety of
benefits. It fights aging by promoting rapid exfoliation of surface skin cells,
exposing an under-layer of fresh new ones. The exfoliation process helps to
minimize the appearance wrinkles and fades brown age spots. It?s important to
use adequate sunscreen, especially after using an exfoliating product. The newly
exposed cells are more susceptible to the suns damaging rays.Because of its
natural anti inflammatory properties, salicylic acid is commonly found in
products geared toward those with sensitive skin or conditions like Rosacea.
Research even suggests that in addition to its cosmetic benefits, the copper
found in some salicylic acid may even have cancer fighting properties. Most over
the counter products contain only one or two percent salicylic acid, which is
strong enough to be effective, but gentle enough to be used on a daily basis. A
doctor might prescribe a product with a stronger dose, usually four to 14
percent, for short term treatment of a specific problem. Higher percentages,
about 20 percent, can be used as dermal peels.Salicylic acid is great for oily
and acne prone skin. Oil control and loosening of blemish-causing blackheads are
just another bonus of the exfoliation process. After removing all debris,
salicylic penetrates the newly opened pore and kills the bacteria inside. Its
anti inflammatory properties help reduce redness and swelling, making the
blemish less conspicuous while it heals.Unfortunately, salicylic acid isn?t for
everybody. Used in low concentrations, it is fine for people with sensitive
skin, but those who are allergic to it should consider a product with glycolic
acid or lactic acid as an alternative. It?s worth noting, that people who are
allergic to fruit are possibly allergic to salicylic acid as well. The effects of
salicylic acid have not been studied on pregnant women, but studies have shown
that it causes birth defects in animals when consumed orally in doses much
stronger than the maximum recommended dose for topical use in humans.Other
medical conditions may be exacerbated by the use of salicylic acid, especially
blood vessel disease. Diabetics need to be aware that it can cause ulcerations
of the skin, particularly on the hands and feet. People who have recently used
Accutane for acne treatment could experience a chemical burn-like reaction. For

[] History Of The Pawpaw Tree

has posted a new item, 'History Of The Pawpaw Tree'

Pawpaw trees were discovered in 1541 by the Spanish explorer, Hernando Desoto,
on an excursion into the Mississippi Valley, and he sent samples of this plant
back to Europe. William Bartram in 1776 stated in his botanical book, Travels,
that he found pawpaw trees growing on the Alatamaha River in Georgia and in east
Florida, which he described as, ?Annona incarna,? the name later was updated by
modern taxonomists. ?The fruit the size of a small cucumber ?containing a yellow
pulp of the consistence of a hard custard, and a very delicious, wholesome
food.? This fruit is agreeably flavored and considered to be the largest native
fruit of North America. The pawpaw trees are said to be endangered or threatened
in the states of New York and New Jersey, in the forests where it grows
naturally. The pawpaw tree grows across most of the eastern United States as a
native tree. Mature pawpaw trees produce fruits 2" wide by 10" long, looking and
tasting very much like a banana. The fruit is liked immensely by most people and
may be purchased at many outdoor markets in West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee,
etc. The pawpaw pulp has the consistency of creamy custard and may be eaten raw,
baked, or used as a pie filling. The trees grow about 15' tall and have been
known to produce as much as 60 pounds of pawpaws per tree. Some individual
pawpaws weigh up to a pound each. Zones 5-10 Much interest has been recently
directed towards research and development of improved varieties of the pawpaw at
Universities in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio. The large fruit is not well known
in much of the United States, but its flavor and exotic shape make it a
candidate for the expansive, potential of specialty fruit markets in the future.
Taste it once fresh and you will feel compelled to have some of these pawpaw
trees growing in your personal fruit orchard. One of the great horticultural
mysteries of the world is: why have most paw paw trees, that were plentiful
throughout early U.S. forests, virtually disappeared from their natural habitat
today? That answer may lie within the research results (Peterson 1991), that
showed that the paw paw is sensitive to ultraviolet light, thus, paw paw
seedlings may not grow back after the forests have been harvested, and there are
very few virgin forests left in the United States. Paw paws can be found growing
there abundantly, but once the forests are clean-cut, the paw paw will not
usually become re-established. These experiments must be clearly remembered,
when you order your paw paw trees. They must be planted under partial shade of
other trees, however, you may plant your pawpaw trees in the open, if the trees
are grown under shade cloth for a couple of seasons. The tree will lose its
sensitivity to full sunlight once it has become established and the shade cloth
can be discarded. Some gardeners wish to plant their pawpaw trees in pots for a
couple of years under shady conditions, but this is not necessary if the above
guidelines are followed. Since paw paw trees are tap rooted, growth will be slow
during the first year, but after that, very rapid growth occurs afterwards. Paw
paw leaves are large and that large leaf surface generally indicates a need for
large amounts of soil moisture, and therefore, generally, paw paws are found in
their greatest numbers near river flood plains. Leaves or other organic
composted materials are very beneficial to paw paws. The skin of paw paws is
thin and edible and can vary in color from a light green to a golden yellow.
Most people prefer to eat the pawpaw fruit after it becomes soft to the touch.
The custard- like pulp tastes like banana and varies in color from white to deep
orange. The seed are few and large, thus, pawpaws are easy to eat raw. Most paw
paws are sold at roadside markets, because the shelf life is short.
Commercially, the paw paw is important in juices, pies, cakes, custards, ice
cream and other processed products. The pawpaw tree was voted by Better Homes
and Gardens, in the year 2000, as the landscape tree of the year. The pawpaw and
the pawpaw tree are loaded with beneficial health extracts. The bark contains
fluids that demonstrate anti-tumor properties and have been used over the years
to fight scarlet fever and red skin rashes. These extracts from pawpaw trees are
highly useful as an organic insect killer (pesticide). Pawpaw fruits are rich
in minerals such as magnesium, copper, zinc, iron, manganese, potassium, and
phosphorus. The fruit also contains abundant concentrations of Vitamin C,
proteins, and their derivative amino acids. There are a number of grafted
cultivars of paw paw but their range of adaptation is very narrow, and many
cultivars that produce heavy crops of large fruit in Kentucky, Indiana or West
Virginia do not perform satisfactorily in Georgia, Florida, Carolina or Alabama.
Consider buying improved seedling paw paw trees, which appear to be more
adaptable universally. Try some of these trees in your orchard for a real tasty
treat. Learn more about various trees by visiting the author's website:

[] Mineral Makeup - The New Buzz in Cosmetics

has posted a new item, 'Mineral Makeup - The New Buzz in Cosmetics'

There is a new buzz in the cosmetic marketplace. It's mineral makeup! So what
is it and how is it different? Mineral makeup is just as the name suggests made
from minerals. These are naturally occurring minerals and inorganic pigments
from the earth (Metal ores and iron oxides) that are very finely crushed and
milled. They contain no oils, no preservatives, no fragrance, no talc and are
safe for even very sensitive skins. In fact, they are so safe that a lot of
Plastic Surgeons and Dermatologists are recommending them to their patients. Not
only is Mineral makeup not harmful for the skin, it is actually good for it. The
ingredients are so finely milled that they will not clog your pores and because
it is made from inorganic minerals it will not gather moisture to feed bacteria
therefore it is totally pure. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent,
helping to calm and soothe irritated skin. What are the ingredients in Mineral
Makeup? TITANIUM DIOXIDE. This is a naturally occurring white mineral that is a
fantastic sunscreen. It is the second most highly reflective mineral. (the first
is DIAMOND) Therefore it not only acts a physical sunscreen but also helps
minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. ZINC OXIDE This is again a
natural sunscreen giving you a broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. But more than
that it is also used for its wide range of colours. This mineral allows
foundations to be different shades, and is also used in Eye shadows and Blushes.
IRON OXIDE This is a very opaque pigment again used for colouring cosmetics.
KAOLIN CLAY Used for it's oil absorbing qualities. DIMETHICONE Made from silica
that is a combination of minerals but largely comprised of quartz. Dimethicone
aids spreading, is transfer resistant and imparts a remarkable smoothness and
creaminess to the overall product. It also improves coverage without adding
heaviness. It is non-comedogenic and highly water repellent. MICA Is found in
nature in a variety of colours and can be used to add shine and sparkle to
cosmetics. How does it differ from regular makeup? Mineral Makeup is generally
applied with a brush or sponge in a downward motion on a clean, moisturised
skin. If you have very dry skin, the foundation at first can appear a little
powdery but all you have to do is gently mist your face with water and all
powderiness vanishes. For oily skins the foundation contains natural oil
absorbing ingredients, therefore you will find the foundation nice and matte all
through the day. Regardless of your skin type, the foundation will give you a
very natural, fresh appearance all day long. The makeup is also water resistant,
meaning it will not run or smudge in humid weather or throughout your workout or
if you get caught in the rain. All you have to do is pat the water or
perspiration off your face, instead of rubbing it off. Having said that, the
makeup is not difficult to remove. Not containing any waxes or oils all you have
to do is use your regular, favourite makeup remover. Over all, Mineral Makeup is
worth buzzing about. It is truly a major breakthrough in cosmetic skin care.
Once you have tried and perfected the use of Mineral Makeup you will not want to
go back to your old foundations. There are several great companies that
specialise in Mineral Makeup. Check them out for yourself. About the Author

[] Protecting Your Lawn the Organic Way

has posted a new item, 'Protecting Your Lawn the Organic Way'

Many lawn owners like to use chemical pesticides and herbicides to control the
pest and weed growth in their lawn. However, these chemicals are harmful to the
environment if they are not used in the proper way. They may also kill insects
that are actually helpful to the lawn. Runoff from these chemicals may find
their way into the nearby water supply. The two main categories of lawn issues
that you need to deal with on a regular basis are weeds and pests. Before you
can properly implement any form of control, you need to identify the type of
weeds and pests that your lawn has. Once you identify them correctly, you can
look for an organic solution to control these weeds and pests. Weeds are broadly
categorized as broadleaf or narrowleaf. They are further divided into perennial
weeds and annual weeds. The perennial weeds are harder to control as they live
from year to year and produce seeds that help the weeds spread. The annual weeds
grow for one season, produce seeds and then die off. This cycle repeat again the
following year. If you are unsure of what weeds you have in your lawn, you can
take some samples to your county extension or nursery and they will help you
identify them. Once you have them identified, you can formulate a plan to bring
them under control without the use of chemical herbicides. The simplest method
is to use your hands and pull out the weeds together with their roots. However,
the best way to control weeds is to focus on building a healthier lawn. Check
that you are mowing at the right height and ensure that your lawn is getting the
right amount of nutrients and water. Too much or too little nutrients and water
will weaken your lawn and allow the weeds to prosper. Pest is another problem
that you will face constantly and you can also control them using organic
methods. Some of the common pests you will face include armyworms, cutworms,
billbugs and Japanese beetles. You can control these pests the natural way. Many
organic pest control products use natural ingredients such as citrus oils,
garlic and hot peppers. Some product use lemon as its base and they are quite
effective in killing various pests without harming your lawn. You can try to use
a spray that use sesame oil, clove oil and thyme oil as base for repelling
insects like grasshoppers and ants. Another type of spray use black peppers and
garlic for its base and can be safely used on lawns and gardens. This type of
spray will help control mosquitoes, gnats, fleas, and ticks. You can also use
insecticidal soaps to kill most of the soft-bodied pests like chinch bugs and
sod webworms. This type of insecticidal soap work fast, breakdown quickly and
are harmless to humans. You have to mix the insecticidal soap with water and
apply them to your lawn. By the way, if you discover a particular type of insect
is constantly giving you problems, you may want to consider planting another
type of grass that is resistant to that type of insect. Regardless of what type
of pesticides or herbicides you are using, you must use it safely. Pesticides
that are non-toxic to your lawn may be harmful to human beings. Always read the
product labels when using such products. You should always opt for those
products with natural ingredients as its base if you have the choice. A healthy
vigorous lawn has fewer problems and it should be your primary focus for all
your maintenance efforts. Proper aeration, watering, fertilizing and mowing will
help your lawn grow healthily and make it non-conducive for weeds and pest to
thrive. About the Author Jack Greenwood is the webmaster of

[] importance of food elements

has posted a new item, 'importance of food elements'

The purposes of food are to promote growth, to supply force and heat, and to
furnish material to repair the waste which is constantly taking place in the
body. Every breath, every thought, every motion, wears out some portion of the
delicate and wonderful house in which we live. Various vital processes remove
these worn and useless particles; and to keep the body in health, their loss
must be made good by constantly renewed supplies of material properly adapted to
replenish the worn and impaired tissues. This renovating material must be
supplied through the medium of food and drink, and the best food is that by
which the desired end may be most readily and perfectly attained. The great
diversity in character of the several tissues of the body, makes it necessary
that food should contain a variety of elements, in order that each part may be
properly nourished and replenished. The food elements. ------------------- The
various elements found in food are the following: Starch, sugar, fats, albumen,
mineral substances, indigestible substances. The digestible food elements are
often grouped, according to their chemical composition, into three classes;
vis., carbonaceous, nitrogenous, and inorganic. The carbonaceous class includes
starch, sugar, and fats; the nitrogenous, all albuminous elements; and the
inorganic comprises the mineral elements. Starch is only found in vegetable
foods; all grains, most vegetables, and some fruits, contain starch in
abundance. Several kinds of sugar are made in nature's laboratory; cane, grape,
fruit, and milk sugar. The first is obtained from the sugar-cane, the sap of
maple trees, and from the beet root. Grape and fruit sugars are found in most
fruits and in honey. Milk sugar is one of the constituents of milk. Glucose, an
artificial sugar resembling grape sugar, is now largely manufactured by
subjecting the starch of corn or potatoes to a chemical process; but it lacks
the sweetness of natural sugars, and is by no means a proper substitute for
them. Albumen is found in its purest, uncombined state in the white of an egg,
which is almost wholly composed of albumen. It exists, combined with other food
elements, in many other foods, both animal and vegetable. It is found abundant
in oatmeal, and to some extent in the other grains, and in the juices of
vegetables. All natural foods contain elements which in many respects resemble
albumen, and are so closely allied to it that for convenience they are usually
classified under the general name of "albumen." The chief of these is gluten,
which is found in wheat, rye, and barley. Casein, found in peas, beans, and
milk, and the fibrin of flesh, are elements of this class. Fats are found in
both animal and vegetable foods. Of animal fats, butter and suet are common
examples. In vegetable form, fat is abundant in nuts, peas, beans, in various of
the grains, and in a few fruits, as the olive. As furnished by nature in nuts,
legumes, grains, fruits, and milk, this element is always found in a state of
fine subdivision, which condition is the one best adapted to its digestion. As
most commonly used, in the form of free fats, as butter, lard, etc., it is not
only difficult of digestion itself, but often interferes with the digestion of
the other food elements which are mixed with it. It was doubtless never intended
that fats should be so modified from their natural condition and separated from
other food elements as to be used as a separate article of food. The same may be
said of the other carbonaceous elements, sugar and starch, neither of which,
when used alone, is capable of sustaining life, although when combined in a
proper and natural manner with other food elements, they perform a most
important part in the nutrition of the body. Most foods contain a percentage of
the mineral elements. Grains and milk furnish these elements in abundance. The
cellulose, or woody tissue, of vegetables, and the bran of wheat, are examples
of indigestible elements, which although they cannot be converted into blood in
tissue, serve an important purpose by giving bulk to the food. With the
exception of gluten, none of the food elements, when used alone, are capable of
supporting life. A true food substance contains some of all the food elements,
the amount of each varying in different foods. Uses of the food elements.
-------------------------- Concerning the purpose which these different
elements serve, it has been demonstrated by the experiments of eminent
physiologists that the carbonaceous elements, which in general comprise the
greater bulk of the food, serve three purposes in the body; 1. They furnish
material for the production of heat; 2. They are a source of force when taken
in connection with other food elements; 3. They replenish the fatty tissues of
the body. Of the carbonaceous elements, starch, sugar, and fats, fats produce
the greatest amount of heat in proportion to quantity; that is, more heat is
developed from a pound of fat than from an equal weight of sugar or starch; but
this apparent advantage is more than counterbalanced by the fact that fats are
much more difficult of digestion than are the other carbonaceous elements, and
if relied upon to furnish adequate material for bodily heat, would be productive
of much mischief in overtaxing and producing disease of the digestive organs.
The fact that nature has made a much more ample provision of starch and sugars
than of fats in man's natural diet, would seem to indicate that they were
intended to be the chief source of carbonaceous food; nevertheless, fats, when
taken in such proportion as nature supplies them, are necessary and important
food elements. The nitrogenous food elements especially nourish the brain,
nerves, muscles, and all the more highly vitalized and active tissues of the
body, and also serve as a stimulus to tissue change. Hence it may be said that a
food deficient in these elements is a particularly poor food. The inorganic
elements, chief of which are the phosphates, in the carbonates of potash, soda,
and lime, aid in furnishing the requisite building material for bones and
nerves. Proper combinations of foods. ----------------------------- While it
is important that our food should contain some of all the various food elements,
experiments upon both animals and human beings show it is necessary that these
elements, especially the nitrogenous and carbonaceous, be used in certain
definite proportions, as the system is only able to appropriate a certain amount
of each; and all excess, especially of nitrogenous elements, is not only
useless, but even injurious, since to rid the system of the surplus imposes an
additional task upon the digestive and excretory organs. The relative proportion
of these elements necessary to constitute a food which perfectly meets the
requirements of the system, is six of carbonaceous to one of nitrogenous.
Scientists have devoted much careful study and experimentation to the
determination of the quantities of each of the food elements required for the
daily nourishment of individuals under the varying conditions of life, and it
has come to be commonly accepted that of the nitrogenous material which should
constitute one sixth of the nutrients taken, about three ounces is all that can
be made use of in twenty-four hours, by a healthy adult of average weight, doing
a moderate amount of work. Many articles of food are, however, deficient in one
or the other of these elements, and need to be supplemented by other articles
containing the deficient element in superabundance, since to employ a dietary in
which any one of the nutritive elements is lacking, although in bulk it may be
all the digestive organs can manage, is really starvation, and will in time
occasion serious results. It is thus apparent that much care should be
exercised in the selection and combination of food materials. Such knowledge is
of first importance in the education of cooks and housekeepers, since to them
falls the selection of the food for the daily needs of the household; and they
should not only understand what foods are best suited to supply these needs, but
how to combine them in accordance with physiological laws. About the Author

[] When to Apply Lime to Your Lawn

has posted a new item, 'When to Apply Lime to Your Lawn'

Before you know if you need to apply lime to your lawn, you need to know the pH
level of your soil. The pH level will indicate whether your lawn soil is too
acidic or alkaline. The pH level range from 1.0 to 14.0. A value of 1.0 indicate
extreme acidity and a value of 14.0 indicates extreme alkaline. A desirable or
balanced pH level is between 6.5 and 7.0. If your lawn soil has a pH level in
this range, your grasses will grow healthily and there is less chance of weeds
growing. If the pH level of your lawn soil is less than 6.5, it is acidic and
you have to add lime to bring it back to balance. In general, when there is an
increase in rainfall, the acidity of your soil will also increase. Other factors
that can cause acidity include irrigating with water that has a high acid
content and decomposition of organic matter. You can purchase a soil test kit
from your nearest nursery or garden center to test your lawn soil pH. However,
the test result will only tell you if your soil is acidic or alkaline. You will
not know how much lime is required to bring the soil back to balance. A better
alternative is to send a soil sample to a soil test lab for testing. You can
look up the yellow pages to find one that is located in your vicinity. Once the
soil test is completed by the lab, you will receive a report with an accurate
analysis of your soil chemistry and composition. There should be a section in
the report indicating the amount of lime you need to apply to your lawn. There
are a few type of lime available in the market. The most common type being
pulverized limestone, which is relatively inexpensive. Another type is dolomitic
limestone, which contain magnesium. This is used when the soil test indicates
that your soil is low in magnesium. The more expensive type of lime is
pelletized limestone, which is cleaner and easier to apply. When applying time,
you should use a rototiller to work the lime into the soil for best result. You
can apply lime any time during the growing season but not when the grasses are
wilted or frost covered. Do not apply fertilizer immediately after a lime
application. Give the lime about two weeks to improve the soil before applying
fertilizer. If you have a new lawn, you should apply the lime before planting
any seed.A soil test should be done every three to four years. Apply lime to
your soil only when the test result indicates such necessity. Too much lime will
cause your soil pH to go off balance, which will lead to other lawn problems. As
long as you are able to maintain a balanced pH level for your soil, your lawn
will have a easier time to grow healthily.Jack Greenwood is the webmaster of

[] Eco-Friendly Textiles

has posted a new item, 'Eco-Friendly Textiles'

The textile industry is considered as the most ecologically harmful industry in
the world. The eco-problems in textile industry occur during some production
processes and are carried forward right to the finished product. In the
production process like bleaching and then dyeing, the subsequent fabric makes a
toxin that swells into our ecosystem. During the production process controll?ng
pollution is as vital as making a product free from the toxic effect. The
utilization of rayon for clothing has added to the fast depleting forests.
Petroleum-based products are harmful to the environment. In order to safeguard
our environment from these effects, an integrated pollution control approach is
needed. Luckily there is an availability of more substitutes.Eco-friendly
fabricsHemp, wool, organic cotton, soy silk, bamboo fabrics, jute, corn fiber
etc are considered as eco-friendly fabrics due to their availability from nature
with out any harmful effects of chemical or toxics. Moreover, as compared to
other synthetic fibers they are available in a cheaper rate.Textile chemical
processing is shifting to undeveloped countries due to easy availability of
low-cost labor and minimum eco-restrictions. This is also because of various
manufacturing processes undertaken by developed countries and awareness about
the related health hazards amongst these people. However, such measures though
may be beneficial for the employer, but they are unsafe for the society and
therefore their control is very much needed. So, various functions related to
the textile industry which are considered as major factors for eco-friendliness
are mentioned below:Cultivation of cottonCotton cultivation requires large
amount of pesticides, fertilizers and water. With the increasing use of cotton,
22.5 percent of insecticides are used globally for it. Subsequently, this
increasing use of cotton requires approximately 257 gallons of water for one
T-shirt. Pesticides are biologically active chemical compounds, which curtail
the growth of organism like bacteria, fungus, algae, insects, etc. Averting the
augmentations of these unwanted organisms improve the crop yield make the
quality of fiber better. Water if utilized in too much quantity in irrigation of
cotton, can increase the salinity of land and thereby decrease its
fertility.SpinningIn the spinning process, individual fibers float in the air
and thus pollute the atmosphere in the spinning department. Such floating fibers
are dangerous to human beings who inhale it. To minimize the effect of these
floating fibers or impurities, the humidified air which is scattered in the
spinning department is filtered so as to remove these floating impurities from
the air.SizingIn the sizing function, starch is used in sticky paste form to the
yarn to enhance its strength and abrasion resistance. The starch paste consists
of preservations in order to protect it from the attack of microorganisms. Some
preservatives like pentachlorophenol, which are obtained from phenolic and/or
chlorinated compound, possess a toxic effect on human skin. Hence, such
preservations should be avoided. Utilizing a synthetic starch decreases the use
of such preservations, thereby decreasing the health hazards likely to occur
because of phenolic and/or chlorinated preservative.Loom shedThere are two types
of pollutants created by the loom shed, namely floating particles like fibrous
substances and size particles and noise pollutions. If proper measures are not
taken during the weaving operations, oil stains are formed. Before textile
chemical processing, these oil stains are removed in subsequent gray folding
department by applying stain remover. Hence, measures are taken to lessen oil
stains in the cloth and probably the application of carbon tetra chloride based
products should be avoided in stain remover and other textile products.Textile
processing regarded as non-eco-friendly Use of chemicals like potassium
dichromate, sodium hypochlorite or peroxide and sodium hypochlorite in the
preparation process of desizing, scouring and bleaching with their related
wash-off stages, produces heavy Biological Oxygen Demands (BOD) in the
effluents. Chlorine is not used in bleaching because it creates halogenated
organic substances, of which some are suspected to be carcinogenic, e.g.,
chloroform. For decreasing BOD, it is recommended to choose the size recipes
offering a low COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and BOD value. A change from pure
starch to synthetic starch decreases BOD because of starches by approximately 90
per cent.Wool industry uses chlorine? based compounds for anti-shrinking
dealing, and such practice also generates toxic effluent. For removing rust
stains in bleaching, before bleaching the cloth is treated with oxalic acid. The
oxalic acid is lethal to aquatic organisms and it increases COD and BOD to a
significant level.Peroxide bleaching requires a stabilizer to ensure identical
and monitored bleaching during the bleaching operation. Optional stabilizers
such as Aminio Tri Methylene Phosphoric Acid (ATMP), Hydroxy Ethyidine
Disphosphonic Acid (HEDA), Diethylene Triaminc Penta Methylene Phosphoric Acid
(DTPMP) and Ethylene Diamine Tetra Methylene Phosphoric Acid (EDTMP) are also
being suggested as peroxide stabilizers.DyeingGerman legislation consumer goods
ordinance states that, "No articles of dresses (textiles, shoes, leather) and
bed linen can be put in trade, if they have been colored with azo dyes that can
release one of the twenty named amines". Currently the list has been extended to
24 amines. The prohibition includes a variety of other commodity goods like
leather components for furniture, seat covers, etc. The prohibited amines have
been categorized as amines of the MAK Group-III A 1 and III A 2.MAK Group III
AI: (workplace exposure): Carcinogenic amines: Benzidine, 4-chloro-o-toluidine,
2-naphtylamine and 4-aminodiphenyl.MAK Group III A 2: These materials are tested
only on animals and they have been proved carcinogenic. A variety of amines in
these types are: a-toluidine, o-dianisidine, o-tolidine, o-aminoazotoluene,
p-chroanneline, 3' dichlorobenzidine, 2-amino,4-nitrotoluene and 2,
4-toluylene, diamine. This group also includes materials that may perhaps
produce health hazards. Some dyes form carcinogenic amines on reduction in dyeing
and hence they require to be strictly evaded as per stipulation in a number of
countries, considerably for increase of BOD/COD and hence, these dyes also need
to be avoided for use in dyeing. Most of the known producers have stopped making
and marketing dyes creating carcinogenic amines.High fastness direct dyes should
be chosen in such a way that applying copper or chromium salts in their dyeing
is avoided. Cationic dye fixing agents utilized for direct dyes and reactive
dyes should have low formaldehyde content and low BOD. During reactive dyes the
use of urea needs to be lessened. Instead of extremely contaminated sodium
sulphide other agents such as hydrol or hydroxyl acetone should be used while
dyeing with sulfur dyes.In polyester dyeing, the carriers and leveling agents
utilized should not be supported with chlorinated or phenolic composites.
Carriers supported with chlorobenzene are highly toxic and more or less
carcinogenic. The leveling agents that contain chlorobenzene as well as per
chloroethylene or trichloroethylene are carcinogenic compounds, and therefore
they should be avoided. With regards to the direct, vat, sulfur and reactive
dyes, dyeing processes need huge amount of salt to achieve good exhaustion of
dye-bath. This leads to an increase in the dissolved salts in effluent water.
Therefore, new dyes are being made, which would need less salt dilution for
achieving dye fixation.PrintingAs in the case of dyeing, in printing too, colors
chosen should be non-toxic and not based on forbidden amines. Dyes with high
fixation properties and modified printing process requiring fewer washouts are
recommended to be applied in printing. Use of kerosene in pigment printing has
been significantly decreased, but it should be totally removed. The use of urea
has also been lessened by substituting it with other ingredients and modifying
the printing methods. Citric acid in disperse prints should be substituted by
optional chemicals. For nylon fabric printing phenol is utilized to a
considerable extent, therefore it is suitable to replace it by diethylene
glycol. Application of formaldehyde based on fixers for enhancing fastness of
pigment prints should be limited so as to decrease free formaldehyde in final
fabric.FinishingChemical formaldehyde based cross-linking agents applied to
cellulosic textiles for crease resistance and dimensional stability are the most
toxic chemicals. Free formaldehyde may be discharged from resin-finished fabrics
either because of un-responded formaldehyde in the product in cross-linking or
while storage of the finished fabrics. Many countries set various tolerance
limits for free formaldehyde according to the end use of the treated fabrics or
garments. Presence of formaldehyde in the atmosphere and in waste-water is
regarded as highly toxic and to overcome this trouble, formaldehyde scavengers
(chemicals which neutralize toxic effects of formaldehyde) are to be used.Among
the various procedures, finishing presumes significant importance because the
value addition is understood by functional finishing of cotton in fabric or
garment form to reveal advantageous properties. Some of the most important
finishes are easy care, durable press, wrinkle-free finishes, softening and
enzyme/ bio-finishing.Approaches for eco-friendly practicesAny organized
approach to move production towards clean production should have the following
steps:Prevent: To 'prevent' is to give up a process or product in favor of
noticeably improving the environmental situation.Decrease: This can be attained
by reducing the pollutant load, exhaustion and fixation of dyes close to 100 per
cent and responding to water and energy requirement.Re-utilize: Re-utilization
of the dye bath is a vital deliberation under the pressure of dwindling
resources. This has now turned into pragmatism because of addition of new
auxiliaries, modern filter technology and spectrophotometers that calculate the
substance of the dye in the dye bath accurately.Recycle: This recycling of
natural fibers is achievable, but it has a limitation of application because of
natural degradation. Synthetic fibers can be recycled by melting down and re
granulating with or without applying fresh granules. This perhaps is most
acceptable to 'green' organizations, but is limited due to lack of uses for the
material recycled.Eco-factorsWith respect to clothing textiles, the phrase
'ecology' can be classified into three groups:1) Production ecology, which
includes: . Cultivation and harvesting of natural synthetic fibers. . Production
of regenerated and synthetic fibers. . Production of yarns, twisted threads and
fabrics. . Finishing.Garment production by using fertilizers, growth regulators,
crop protection agents like pesticides and a range of textile chemicals,
auxiliaries and finishing agents.2) User Ecology, which is related to the
clothing textiles and the substances that give them beauty and performance
characteristics during application.3) Disposal Ecology, which refers to the
disposal of textiles after application i.e., to-recycling composting, dumping or
incinerating in a manner that ascertains the least probable environment
effect. The related factors for eco-standards are: Formaldehyde, pesticide,
carcinogenic dyestuff, skin neutrality, heavy metal content, -pH, fastness to
perspiration.Eco-IabellingEco-standards and eco-labels are quickly started to
have significance in arrange to have a successful expert and market promotion in
the apparel and textile industry. For the delivering eco-labels particular
standards should be set, i.e., these measures are developed on analyzing the
product's whole life cycle beginning with the selection of raw materials
progressing through the stages of production, packaging, distribution, use and
disposal after utilization. Some of them are as described below:OEKO- TEX
Standard 100:For research and testing in the field of textile ecology, the OEKO-
TEX standards were given by the Austrian Textile Research Institute and the
German "Hohenstein Research Institute".The OEKO-TEX standards have described a
variety of norms and limit values for different classes. They can be described
as follows: . Product class I: Defined for babies and infants up to two years of
age. . Product class II: This class is defined for textiles that come into
direct contact with the skin and cover a large part of its surface, during
usage. . Product class III: The class includes textiles which do not come into
direct contact with the skin or cover only a small part of its surface during
application. . Product class IV: This class covers furnishing materials which
are used for decorative purposes.MST (Markenzeichen Schadstoffgeprufter
Textile):This is a product label, which is to be used for products that are made
in Germany and referring only properties of textiles.Trademarks for textile
tested harmful substances:MUT: This is a trademark for textiles that are made by
environmentally sound protection methods (VVUT). It needs acquiescence of
certain rules in their manufacture.GUT: This eco-Iabel was established by
well-known companies in European carpet industry. GUT exists for "Gemeinschaft
Umweltfreundlicher Teppichboden." It is an association for environmentally
friendly carpets with an objective of maximizing textile floor-coverings and
their protection cycle.GuW: It is a seal of Eco-friendly Furnishing Fabric
Association.CLEAN FASHION: It is an Eco-label introduced by private companies
related to textiles.STEILMANN: This is an Eco-Iabel of the most prominent German
Textile Company.GREEN COTTON: A label based on an internal evaluation system
that considers social, ecological and toxicological values.ECO MARK: This is an
Indian eco-Iabel.Function of ISO 14000The ISO 14000 series of international
standards have been made to tackle issues dealing with environment today. The
main aims of ISO 14000 are: . Protection of natural resources. . Reduction and
abatement of waste and emission. . Constant improvement in environmental
performances. . Efficiency in process by application of the best available
technology. . Compliance to national and international environmental laws and
convention.Eco-managementIn India each state has its own pollution control
authority. This authority mainly deals with water pollution by textile industry.
The aim is to ensure that the effluent water being discharged into city sewage,
stream, river or sea is not harmful to human, animal or plant life. In order to
get the parameters of effluent water to suitable standards, the effluents are
treated by effluent treatment plant. For controlling air and noise pollution in
India, the pollution control authorities have taken subjective steps. It can be
stated that basically no steps are taken by pollution control authorities to
control air and noise pollution in textile industry. In the case of toxicity of
textile products, the awareness is increasing in India due to rigid rules and
regulations being set up by developed countries. It has forced Indian producers
to fulfill these rules and regulations for attracting exporters. In
eco-management systems followed in textile industry, water utilized for washing
is re-used. Also the caustic soda used in mercerisation is recovered and
re-used.Water pollutionTextile industries use the maximum amount of water. In
the industries, water is contaminated with different chemicals and auxiliaries,
which are used for producing textile goods. These chemicals are
non-bio-degradable and their elimination before releasing the water is
important. The polluted water is unsafe for fauna and flora due to high
temperature, odors, turbidity, colors and toxic chemicals.Controlling water
pollution:Water pollution is controlled by treating the effluent water in three
ways: a. Primary treatment includes neutralization and elimination of suspended
solids by sedimentation, flotation, flocculation and coagulation techniques. b.
Secondary treatment process is done by the presence of micro-organism developed
at the surface of sewage, sludge in the presence of chemical nutrients such as
urea and super phosphates. c. Tertiary treatments include:Chemical oxidation:
Some inorganic from insolubles precipitate over restricted ranges of pH.Carbon
oxidation: Activated carbon has a surface area, which can absorb a huge quantity
of organic materials. Use of carbon can be reactivated; it is extremely useful
in eliminating the pigments and dyes, which cannot be eliminated by
coagulation.Management systemFor putting into practice the various measures for
eco-friendly process of textile unit, the management has to finalize its
clear-cut eco-policy. It should recognize that for proper implementation of
these measures additional cost would be involved. As in the case of other costs
there should be constant attempts to decrease these eco-costs, but at the
expense of eco-standards the textile unit needs to maintain.ConclusionTextile
industry plays a vital role in the Indian economy. It constitutes nearly 30 per
cent of India's exports. Globalization of Indian textile industry makes it
necessary to analyze its production techniques, procedures and product qualities
to satisfy all international eco-standards.In different textile production
processes, steps should be taken to ensure that these processes are done
chemically, but do not create any toxic effects. For making sure that the
effluent created complies with the standards set by effluent control
authorities, appropriate changes in recipes should be made, effluent treatment
plants should be set and re-use of effluent wherever viable should be made. The
process of management should be designed in such a way that proper control on
choosing and purchase of input materials are inbuilt in the system itself. The
cost of effluent treatment is measured as inevitable. Any effort to decrease
this cost should not be made by diluting' eco-standards. Suitable audit system
should also be introduced by textile units, which ensure that eco-standards are
realized.Fibre2fashion - Free Industry Article section offers Free Textile

[] Pure Skin Organic Beauty Basics Book review by Wayne'r

has posted a new item, 'Pure Skin Organic Beauty Basics Book review by Wayne'r'

Pure Skin Organic Beauty Basics By Barbara Close This book has a great
balance between information on skin care, information on how to make your own
organic ingredients and the recipes to use them in. The skin care section is
divided into stress reactive, hormone reactive, environment reactive, and
mature, this is a lot like Nicholas Perricone's brake down of skin types. Which
I like because your skin is always changing. Blending essential oils I have to
agree, that any more than four oils gets to be to much. And I really like the
section on how to infuse your own oils. The one new tool you will have to get
is a French Press if you do not already have one. Barbara's recipes for the
most part have only four ingredients in them making them easy to make. Recipes
will cover you from head to toe. Making this a good book if you are new to
making your own skin care products. Eating the right foods does make a
difference in the way your skin looks. The food section is simple to fallow and
not over the top. Close has a real out look on the habits of people, and the
tips she gives will make small changes in the foods you buy for long lasting
results. As for the Resources section it is one of the best that I have Seen. I
have put off the next book at this time just so I can spend more time at each of
these resources. The one I liked the most is The American Botanical Council.
What a great site. This book is a lot like Naturally Beautiful; you will read
it once and go back to it over and over again. I will try to get Barbara's
lecture schedule, she would be a world of information worth hearing. Other book
that she has out are Well Being and The Spa Deck. If you are new or have been
making your own skin care products this is a good book!! Natural Skin Care

[] Discover the mystical healing power of walnuts, an amazing superfood

has posted a new item, 'Discover the mystical healing power of walnuts, an
amazing superfood'

Did you know that one of the easiest and most convenient health foods you can
get today are nuts? Ask me about a week ago about this and I wouldn't have
believed you. I mean nuts? C'mon, how can they possibly be healthy for you. Just
look at the label on any Planters Nuts package. They're loaded with fat and
sometimes plenty of sodium. So how could they possibly be a superfood let alone
one with "mystical" healing powers? That was before I did a little research on
them and enlightened my ignorance. And that was when my eyes and mouth were
opened. And then I popped a small handful of walnuts in my mouth. Let me tell
you a little bit about what I learned, especially about all the fat in walnuts.
Walnuts are low in saturated fat - the bad stuff - and high in both
polyunsaturated and mono-unsaturated fat - the good fats. They are rich in
Omega-3 fatty acids. This is the one we're told to get by eating lots of fish,
especially salmon. Don't know about you but trying to eat salmon 2-3 times a
week to get my allowance of Omega-3 fatty acids can be quite troublesome. Not
too many people have the time to prepare a nice salmon steak. So that's one
reason why walnuts are good for you and me. Another one that I have witnessed
personally is research has shown that including some of these healthy fats that
come from walnuts in your diet can be a benefit to people trying to lose weight.
How? Easy, they make you full. Try this: eat a handful of walnuts with a small
glass of water. Wait about 20-30 minutes and see if you are still hungry. They
will fill you up and keep you from overeating. So whenever I get hungry I snack
on some unsalted peanuts and walnuts and some raisins and keep from eating
unhealthy foods. How else can walnuts help you? The FDA has also come out and
stated that walnuts are helpful in lowering cholesterol and helping in
preventing heart disease and lowering blood pressure. How the heck do they do
that? Walnuts scrub your veins and arteries clean and remove plaque buildup. So
the easier your blood flows through your body the less your heart has to work.
They also contain high amounts of protein, fiber, vitamin B6, folacin, vitamin E
and thiamin - several nutrients your body needs to function properly. They also
help supply your skin with the necessary nutrients it needs to rebuild damaged
tissue. So if you're interested in preserving and improving your skin's
appearance walnuts provide a natural way to help combat the signs of aging.
Where can you buy some? There are two sites I found online:
http://www.ohnuts.com Oh Nuts! http://www.nutsonline.com Nuts Online I saw some
for about $6 a pound. You can also buy some organic ones which sell for about $7
a pound. Beats the cost of most heart disease prescriptions and diet pill
programs. You can also check out your local farmer's market or Whole Foods. The
many nutritional benefits of walnuts have been understood for thousands of
years. I'm just a little slow to this party. Now that I know I eat them everyday
and recommend you give some a try too. You can get the health benefits of
walnuts from just a handful a day. Enjoy.About the Author Adam Tijerina

[] Milk: How Come Mine Doesn't Spoil?

has posted a new item, 'Milk: How Come Mine Doesn't Spoil?'

I bought some organic milk from our local co-op over three weeks ago and opened
it just before we went on a 40-day juice fast. I thought I'd give this milk to
our cat (knowing it would spoil soon and we'd have to get a smaller container
for the cat.) It has been three weeks now and the milk has not spoiled. How can
this be?I know of NO milk that can stay fresh that long. Do they irradiate milk
now? It says on the label "Ultra Pasteurized."I asked around and found another
woman, Crys, who had a similar experience. She related, ?For some reason, I was
out of milk or something. (This was a while ago. I can't remember why. Usually I
always have milk since I milk my own goat every day.) Anyway, I just must have
something to put in my morning coffee. Locally, I could get Horizon organic Half
& Half, so I bought a pint, opened it, used a little and then left it on my
kitchen table and forgot about it for a week and a half. (I'm not known for my
housekeeping.) So, when it finally came time to neaten things up, I cautiously
approached the almost full half & half expecting the worst. Well, there was
nothing wrong with it. Didn't smell bad. Wasn't curdled. Ah, isn't modern
technology grand!?Well, maybe it is, and maybe it isn?t. Crys emailed me a paper
written by the Weston A. Price Foundation which is quite reputable when it comes
to exposing products that putrefy our environment and could damage our physical
beings:Here are a few things that surprised me:The official U.S. government
definition of an ultra-pasteurized dairy product stipulates "such product shall
have been thermally processed at or above 280? F for at least 2 seconds, either
before or after packaging, so as to produce a product which has an extended
shelf life under refrigerated conditions." Confusingly, ultra-pasteurized milk
is oftentimes referred to as or labeled as UHT, for "ultra-high temperature." It
is the high-temperature processing that gives the milk an extended shelf life
(ESL).280 Degrees? That?s way more than boiling. We do we need this? And did you
know that UHT milk remains stable at room temperature for up to six months? Its
extended shelf life with refrigeration in standard packaging, such as plastic
bottles, is up to 50 days!Wow. What does this mean to us and our digestion
process of the milk when so many of us are already lactose intolerant?According
to Lee Dexter, microbiologist and owner of White Egret Farm goat dairy in
Austin, Texas, ultra-pasteurization is an extremely harmful process to inflict
on the fragile components of milk. Dexter explains that milk proteins are
complex, three-dimensional molecules, like tinker toys. They are broken down and
digested when special enzymes fit into the parts that stick out. Rapid heat
treatments like pasteurization, and especially ultra-pasteurization, actually
flatten the molecules so the enzymes cannot do their work. If such proteins pass
into the bloodstream (a frequent occurrence in those suffering from "leaky gut,"
a condition that can be brought on by drinking processed commercial milk), the
body perceives them as foreign proteins and mounts an immune response. That
means a chronically overstressed immune system and much less energy available
for growth and repair.During the heating process, some compounds of the milk
impart a very strong cabbagy flavor that is most noticeable immediately after
heating. These compounds dissipate during storage, but approximately one month
into storage, UHT milk begins to deteriorate and is described in the industry as
"stale." In these later stages of storage, a bitter taste develops, then it
undergoes "age gelation," a process in which the milk becomes more viscous and
eventually loses fluidity. (Gross!)So, it seems the optimum time to drink UHT
milk with any degree of enjoyment, if that?s even possible, is limited to the
interval between the dissipation of the cabbage flavor and the onset of
staleness, bitterness and gelatinous conditions. In the U.S., these off-flavors
seem to go unnoticed, which makes me wonder whether some kind of flavorings or
other chemicals are being added to UHT milk? I did note that my cat did not
particularly want to drink this milk. I thought that maybe she wasn?t used to
organic milk, but maybe she got a whiff of that cabbagy smell?Do you purchase
milk that was packaged in plastic milk jugs? Well, one study took samples of
this milk and found that all the samples contained measurable levels of
endocrine disrupting substances that leaked from the plastic of the containers,
or plastic lining the containers. Even when kept cold, plastic will leach some
chemicals into the liquid it contains; filling plastic-lined containers with
superheated milk or subjecting liquid-filled containers to high heat is a recipe
for hormonal disaster.(What does this mean? Increased infertility,
hypothyroidism, hyperestrogenism, and a bunch of other diseases. Sounds awfully
dangerous to me.)Why does the industry feel they need to ultra pasteurize? They
say it?s because many organisms have become heat resistant and now survive the
pasteurization process. The Johne?s, or paratuberculosis bacterium, is a good
example. Johne?s disease is endemic in today?s confinement dairies and has been
linked to Crohn?s disease in humans. Many samples of pasteurized milk now test
positive for Johne?s bacteria, Bacillus cereus, botulism spores and protozoan
parasites. What?s worse is that State and Federal protocols are trying to make
this type of pasteurization a standard in the industry. Such a move would
redefine ultra-pasteurization as ?pasteurization? so that the words
"ultra-pasteurization" or UHT might then not have to appear on the label.Try
making home-made yogurt out of this stuff. Apparently it doesn?t even set; it
curdles making a cottage-cheese texture.Since ultra-pasteurized or UHT milk will
not adequately support microbial life, it is unlikely that it will adequately
support human life either.Great. Got Milk?To read the full story, In the Kitchen
